Godfrey Lee Early Childhood Center
The Early Childhood Center serves approximately 500 students from preschool through second grade. Under the leadership of the Godfrey Lee Board of Education, 43 highly qualified and certified teachers and itinerant staff members, along with 19 paraprofessionals, and the principal, collaborate to deliver a quality program designed to meet the educational needs of all students.
The preschool through second grade program at the Early Childhood Center incorporates language arts, science, math and social studies core curriculum standards at each grade level. These standards, known as the Kent County Collaborative Core Curriculum, are shared jointly with other districts in Kent County. These standards are based on the state benchmarks and grade level expectations.
Art, music, physical education, library and computer class time is provided for each student, along with his/her academic program. In addition, there are three special education classrooms within the building. An English Language Support program is engaged in working with the non-English speaking students to assist them in learning English.
With oversight from the Curriculum Coordinating Council and approval of the Godfrey Lee Board of Education, students at the Early Childhood Center incorporate the skills taught in the Respect and Responsibility character education program.
The Early Childhood Center evaluates its programs toward its mission statement of teaching and learning for all, through Measures of Academic Performance, Michigan Literacy Progress Profile and other assessments identified by individual classroom teachers.
